Recreating IIS IUSR and IWAM Default Accounts

Last Updated: 13-Apr-2011

Summary

This article outlines the procedure for recreating IIS IUSR_<machine name> and IWAM_<machine name> accounts which may have been deleted or renamed.

Issue

After following the steps listed in Article 10124 the TASKE web application is still providing a Services are not running error. The error reads as follows:

<TASKE web application name> Services Are Not Running

The <TASKE web application name> Services are not running or cannot be located. Please consult with your system administrator.

Reason

Someone may have deleted or renamed the default IIS accounts named IUSR_<machine name> and IWAM_<machine name> (where <machine name> is the local computer name) which are required in order for the TASKE web applications to function correctly.

Solution

You can force IIS to rebuild the original IUSR_<machine name> and IWAM_<machine name> accounts by following these steps:

  1. From the Computer Management Console tree, open the Users folder.
  2. Right click on all of the listed IUSR and IWAM accounts and choose delete.
  3. Click on the Start button, choose Run, type IISRESET and click OK.
  4. When IIS has successfully restarted, select Refresh from the Action menu of the Computer Management Console window to verify that IUSR_<machine name> and IWAM_<machine name> accounts have successfully been rebuilt.

If you have renamed the computer since IIS was initially installed, you may notice that these accounts are named IUSR_<old machine name> and IWAM_<old machine name>. Do not rename these accounts to reflect the current computer name as it will result in the TASKE web application displaying a Services are not running error once again.

It is now recommended that you follow the steps listed in Article 10124 in order to grant the IUSR and IWAM accounts sufficient permissions.
