Article 10054 : Applying MS01-055 Patch to Internet Explorer May Prevent TASKE Sign In

Issue

After applying the MS01-055 patch to Microsoft^® Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.0, users cannot sign into the TASKE web site.

Reason

The MS01-055 patch for Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0 fixes a security flaw related to the naming of servers and the use of cookies. After applying this patch, server names in domains using cookies may only include alphanumeric characters (a-z, 0-9). Servers with domain names that contain inappropriate characters, an underscore (_) for example, are unable to set cookie names and prevent the operation of active server pages (ASP).

The building blocks of the TASKE web site are ASP pages that rely on the information relayed through cookies. The TASKE server computer at any site using the TASKE web site and applying the MS01-055 patch to Internet Explorer must have a name that includes only alphanumeric characters.

Solution

TASKE recommends changing the TASKE server name to a name that includes only alphanumeric characters. Once completed, some changes to the Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) configuration may be necessary.
