Summary
Microsoft® Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 introduce the Windows Firewall security feature. This article outlines how the firewall affects TASKE products and how to add TASKE applications and required ports to the exceptions list and prevent the firewall from blocking applications and data transfer.
Issue
Installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1 on a TASKE server computer or a remote TASKE web server computer causes the Windows Firewall to automatically block some TASKE server applications and ports.
- Blocked applications:
- TASKE Information Server
- TASKE Upgrade Server
- TASKE WallSign Server
- Blocked ports:
- 80
- 5051
- 5052
There is no impact when installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 on a TASKE client computer.
Note: this applies to computers where TASKE products are already installed, or when installing new TASKE products on a computer where Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1 is already installed. Upgrading TASKE products does not re-block applications and ports that have been previously unblocked.
Solution
Launch TASKE Console after installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1. As Console attempts to start the blocked TASKE server applications, the Windows Security Alert dialog box displays the following message for each:
Do you want to keep blocking this program?
Click Unblock to add the application to the Firewall Exceptions list.
If any of the unblocked applications are not automatically started by Console (for instance WallSign Server), start each of these applications and click Unblock in the Windows Security Alert dialog box to add the applications to the Firewall Exceptions list.
For sites using a TASKE web application, the blocked ports must be manually added to the Firewall Exceptions list. To do this, open the Windows Control Panel and select Windows Firewall. Select the Exceptions tab, click Add Port, and add the appropriate ports to the Firewall Exceptions list, ensuring the port type is set to TCP for each.
For TASKE Essential, TASKE Reporter, and TASKE Contact installations where the TASKE Web Services reside on the TASKE server computer, add the following ports to the Firewall Exceptions list:
- 80
- 5051
For TASKE Contact installations where the TASKE Web Services reside on a remote web server computer, add the following ports to the Firewall Exceptions list:
- 80
- 5051
- 5052
